Laser Prague 2007 Congress Final Program

A team of internationally recognized laser scientists and medical doctors participated in the works of the Laser Prague 2007 congress.

Prof. Geinitz, who is the head of the State Scientific Center for Laser Medicine of the Health Ministry of Russia, informed the audience about the wide range of applications of laser technologies in the healthcare in Russia. Prof. Brill (Russia) made 2 reports, presenting the latest experimental results of comparative studies of influence of light of lasers of different wavelengths and blue LEDs on blood platelets, as well as on the immune response of animals. Prof Kaplan (Russia) made a fundamental review of the methods of laser photodynamic therapy and trends of further development in the field. Prof Petrischev (Russia) presented studies about novel photosensitizers and low level laser therapy mechanisms in experimental studies.

Prof. S. Rochkind (Israel) presented advantages of the laser phototherapy as a supportive factor for accelerating and enhancing axonal growth and regeneration after reconstructive peripheral nerve and spinal cord procedures.

Prof. Z. Simunovic (Switzerland) shared his wide clinical experience and double blind studies in the application of laser therapy in the treatment of viral diseases and acne.

Prof. A. Makela (Finland) made review of research works studying photon emission from different blood cells, as well as possible effects of that photoemission on the different body cells. She also made review of the latest research about pathogenesis of diabetes and possible application of laser light, considering the mechanisms of the development of the disease for different patients. U. Oron's (Israel) work was shortly reviewed by her in his absence.

Several reports were dedicated to the issue of the development of better quality laser therapy equipment. Dr. H. Romberg (Germany) and Dr. L. Gasparyan (Finland) presented different issues of laser therapy, including the ways of better designs of the equipment and analysis why the same protocol of laser therapy is not always working equally efficiently when applied by different laser practitioners and by using different equipment.

The report, which caused the biggest discussion, was done by Dr. D. Houssien (Saudi Arabia). He was advocating the positive effect of prayer conducted during sessions of laser therapy on the patients with chronic low back pain. This double blind study was considered as a new approach in scientific research.

Several interesting and valuable reports were presented during LLLT in otoneurology session. Dr. L. Wilden (Germany) presented update to his 15 year treatment experience with patients with tinnitus, and Dr. M. Prochazka (Czech Republic) was providing more of the treatment hints and protocols. Dr. Chung-Ku Rhee (Korea) presented a substantial report about experimental studies about rate of penetration of laser light into cochlea through bones, as well as ability of laser light to limit damage to hair cells, caused by ototoxic antibiotics (in vitro). He also reported their results in the treatment of patients with tinnitus.

Dr. I. Ingenegeren (Germany) showed that laser is already a valuable and useful instrument in all parts of implant surgery.

Laser safety issues, including the latest international and European regulations were discussed by P. Smalley (USA), and advantages of quality management certification (international standards ISO 9001:2000) for laser clinics and laser equipment manufacturers have been presented by Dr. P. Fryda (Czech Republic).

A large delegation from Iran presented a wide variety of very interesting, well designed clinical studies in aesthetic surgery as well as in orthopedics and traumatology and ENT.

Scientific bases of laser acupuncture were examined in a number of studies. Dr. G. Litscher (Austria) reported about the progress in providing evidence of cerebral functional changes during non-invasive laser acupuncture with the help of newly developed ultrasound and high-tech neuromonitoring equipment. He showed that it is possible for the first time to demonstrate reproducible specific effects of laserneedle acupuncture both peripherally and centrally. Dr. M. Weber (Germany) reported results of basic science research and the clinical results of more than 8000 cases of non-invasive laser acupuncture treatments. Dr. A Bohbot (France) presenting results of treatment of Multiple sclerosis by the laser acupuncture technique. He was using MRI examination to control the progress of the therapy. A. Fors (Finland) reported about treatment of Colitis Ulcerosa, using electro-laser therapy.

O. Hakanen (Finland) reported about positive effect of blue light in the treatment of Morton's neurinoma.

The best report award was nominated to Dr. S. Mokmeli (Iran) for a study "The effect of low level laser therapy on blood prolactin level in normal healthy parturients undergone ceasarean operation" and the best poster to Dr. I. Dementjeva (Russia) for "The influence of led irradiation at different wavelengths and antioxidants on functional activity of blood platelets".

Laser Prague 2007 Congress took place in Hotel Pyramida and was organized by Guarant. Unfortunately, due to some organizational faults of Pyramida hotel reservation and desk services (hotel was overbooked), several congress participants had troubles with their rooms, some of them were forced to move to other hotel and even were charged higher, than it was quoted earlier.
